Personal Work

Koreatown is a place that is deeply rooted in history and defined by its people. It’s only fitting that the brand identity for it should be focused on its people, pay tribute to where they came from, and how it can best serve them.

The new visual identity envisions a dual-language system, based around a custom Korean logotype and traditional themes and motifs. Brand items speak to the rich community, thriving nightlife, and mixed-generation population that make up the area known as Koreatown within Los Angeles.

Logotype: Custom Korean typeface based on the first Korean metal type. Glyphs and webdings were added into the typeface set to provide an accessible set of graphics for non-designer users.

PROMOTIONAL POSTER SERIES:
Features the four cardinal directions/streets that border Koreatown with a directory of local eateries in the area. Korean color theory (known as obangsaek) is used.

PROMOTIONAL FLYERS & DIRECTORIES:
Printed on standard colored cardstock and utilizing glyphs and webdings to make them accessible for non-designer users to produce and distribute.

ORIGINS: a bilingual, seasonal newspaper that dives deeper into aspects of Korean culture in Koreatown such as small businesses, food, and language.

Promotional Poster Series

A super-bold, retro typeface that evokes the chunky signage of Koreatown was employed for select pull quotes in the newspaper.
